With Thanksgiving fast approaching, my wife and I are planning our two hour trip to Coffeyville, Kansas for Thanksgiving with family. We always talk about who’s riding with who to conserve fuel money and how many vehicles it’s going to take for the drive down. Every year at this time we always wish we had a larger car to fit in more of the kids and other family members. I wish I had a Suburban for times like this but I always think about sitting behind the wheel of our 1966 T-Bird on a road trip…..if only I had enough time and money to get the project rolling. This leads me to think about the cost of fuel and driving the beast with the high fuel prices. Although fuel prices are low now they will surely head back up to the $4 gallon mark again. But what if I could drive my classic car and get 100mpg?
I first read about Johnathan Goodwin in my Fast Company Magazine. They called him the Motorhead Messiah. He runs his shop in Wichita, Kansas. He takes some of the largest gas guzzling cars made such as Hummers and Yukons and turns them into fuel efficient, low emmision green machines.
In doing so he also boosts horsepower and torque. He has converted a Jeep for Arnold Schwarzenegger and is currently working with Neil Young on a 1959 Lincoln. The project is called Linc Volt. Their goal is 100 mpg with the heaviest car made in 1959. What’s really great is that it’s all taking place in Wichita which is just a few miles down the road.
HERE is the link to Neil Young’s car.
HERE is the article I read in Fast Company about Johnathan Goodwin.
