Body filler really changed for the better when they started making the “tack free” fillers. The older body fillers always dried with a soft gummy layer on top that usually had to be removed with real course sandpaper or a tool called a cheesegrader. A lot of sandpaper was wasted because it would clog so bad. Once the gummy layer was removed then you could really start sanding without it clogging up your sandpaper.
With the tack free fillers you can let the filler harden and most of time you can start out sanding with 80 grit paper with very little or no clogging. It really is a time saver and cuts down on the sandpaper cost. Good sandpaper isn’t cheap.
There are a lot of different brands of body fillers on the market. I have used a lot of different brands over the years including Dynalite, Bondo, PPG, and 3M.
The past 7 or 8 years I have been using Evercoat Rage. Evercoat has three types of Rage fillers. They have the standard Rage, Rage Gold and the newest Rage Extreme. They are all top quality fillers. I have been mainly using Rage Gold. I have used Rage Extreme and really liked it but with the price difference over the Gold from my supplier I didn’t think it was worth it.
I highly recommend the Evercoat Rage even though the cost is over $35 a gallon. You can purchase it at your local auto body & paint supplier or you might ask your local body shop if they would sell you some. They might give you a little bit of a discount compared to the stores. If you want to purchase it online go try TCPGlobal: Your 1-stop for auto, hot rod & car restoration paint, tools & shop supplies & LearningCenter.
I have personally used them and they have great service.
